SHILLONG, NOV 14: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said the state government would soon take a call on whether to institute an independent inquiry into the attack on social activist Agnes Kharshiing and her associate Amita Sangma in coal-rich East Jaintia Hills District.
Speaking to reporters at the sidelines of a function here on Wednesday, Conrad informed that he would soon convene a meeting on the matter.
“We will be consulting with all our colleagues in the Cabinet and will take a join decision on how we should move forward as yes it is a serious matter,” he said while responding to a query on the growing demand for instituting an inquiry into the incident.
Agnes and Amita received severe head injuries after they were attacked by a group of 30-40 people suspected to be mining mafias at Tuber Sohshrieh in coal-rich district of East Jaintia Hills on November 8.
The incident also took place when they were returning from Ladrymbai after lodging a complaint against illegal mining and transportation of coal.
Police have so far arrested only two accused identified as Elphon Dkhar (22) and Meklison Siangshai (26).
Stating that the incident is totally condemnable and unacceptable, the chief minister also assured that the state government will take stern measures to ensure the guilty are brought to justice.
Asked, he said that the government will look into all aspects and all the complaints (including illegal coal mining) adding “We will give due importance that is required.”
Earlier on Tuesday night, the chief minister also visited the super speciality hospital, NEIGRIHMS to express solidarity with the victims and their family members.
“Was quite sad to see what difficult phase they had to go through but by God’s blessing she (Agnes) is improving and yesterday she has regained consciousness. I was lucky to see that she recognized me she saw me she indicated to express that yes I can see you and thank you for coming,” Conrad stated.
