SHILLONG, OCT 12: Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui on Wednesday assured that action will be taken against the recent use of tear gas against the protesting contractual teachers as per law.
“We will take action on anything which goes beyond the law. We have to understand the situation as we are here not to protect anybody nor are we here to hide anything but before doing anything we have to follow due process of law,” Rymbui told reporters.
The United Democratic Party (UDP) leaders have recently asked Rymbui to take action against the incident of using tear gas against teachers who are protesting peacefully as it had drawn criticism from all quarters of society.
His statement also came after one of the pressure groups threatened to march to the secretariat against the government’s delay to suspend those involved in the issuing as well as executing the order to use tear gas during the incident.
Rymbui, who is also education minister, said that the report sought from the district administration is yet to reach him. “Therefore, when I get the report I will look into what are the necessary things to be done, we will do accordingly,” he assured.
Earlier, UDP leaders had defended by saying that it was difficult for Rymbui to take decisions on many issues related to the teachers since the finance department was not under him.
When asked about this, the home minister said everybody in a coalition government has a collective responsibility to serve the state of Meghalaya.
“It is not a question of one man but we have to see that the issue at hand if we can resolve it we should resolve it,” he added.
