SHILLONG, DEC 20: Meghalaya government today inked a memorandum of agreement (MOA) for developing of three power plants using Closed Loop Vertical Turbine (CLVT), a first its kind renewable technology in Asia, to generate 120 mega watt of power.
The project in Meghalaya also the first in the country will be implemented by the M/S Renew Joule Private Limited in three identified locations which include Byrnihat in Ri Bhoi, Mendipathar in North Garo Hills and Ampati in South West Garo Hills.
The MOA was signed between the officials of the state power department and the company in the presence of chief minister Mukul Sangma at the main secretariat here on Wednesday.
According to the officials of the company, the CLVT is a new technology which works on the principles of buoyancy and gravity that seeks to convert kinetic energy into electricity.
Stating that land is not an issue to execute such a project, company director Manoj Sompura said to start with, they will generate 24 mega watt of power in each of the three locations and only 5 acres of land is required.
“The construction works will right away start by the first week of January next year and by the month of April we will be able to give the first unit,” he said while informing that the capital cost per mega watt is around Rs 8 crore.
Earlier while addressing media persons, chief minister Mukul Sangma said the project using the new technology is going to bring a revolution in the power sector in as far as the generation of power is concerned.
“The power passed on to the consumers will ultimately be competively cheap. It not just green and not just renewable but it is cheapest power to be generated from this new technology,” he said.
Sangma also said that the introduction of the new technology will to a great solve the problem of power shortage in the state besides bringing down the Aggregate Technical and Commercial (AT&C) losses.
Stating that it is a great moment for the state, the chief minister said that the government after long drawn exercise has been able to attract friends from various parts of the world to look at Meghalaya as a potential destination for investment in this crucial sector.
“And it is also while keeping in mind our commitment to ensure that the whole investment strategies revolves around the concept of green economy,” he said adding “We are proud of our huge biodiversity reserve, the forest, green coverage and flora fauna, rivers and way of life and we want to preserve them and ensure that our state take pride in being able to give pure air for our people to breathe.”
Asserting that the outcome of the innovation in technology needs to be utilized as an engine of growth, Sangma said that this is in view that every growth in the industrial sector is associated with the evils of industrial growth (polluting industries) which dilutes the agenda of achieving that kind of target in ensuring clean energy.
“Meghalaya with this initiative in partnership with investors looks forward in setting the new benchmark in the power sector and become the pioneering state in contributing in the nation’s endeavour along with rest of the world in dealing with challenges climate change effect and result in global warming besides taking care of need for energy,” he said.
Meanwhile, the chief minister also extended his congratulations to the power department and also hopes that project will create history in attracting the attention of the global community.
