SHILLONG, NOV 25: The state government on Friday sought the intervention of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) into the killing of five persons in an unprovoked firing by the Assam police at Mukroh village in West Jaintia Hills District.
The Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma-led cabinet delegation met the chairperson of the NHRC Justice Arun Kumar Mishra and briefed him on the Mukroh firing incident terming it as ‘inhumane act’ by the Assam police.
The delegation said that the action by Assam police was in complete violation of human rights and that the Centre had already decided to institute a CBI probe into the incident.
“We have asked for their (NHRC) support in this entire matter and also requested them to take necessary action from their side as this is a clear case of human rights violation,” the chief minister said after the meeting.
Sangma also emphasized on the need to ensure proper sensitization of the forces deployed along the inter-state border.
“We have also asked them that in the future these kinds of incidents should not be repeated and hence proper sensitization needs to be taken in terms of the forces that are there in the different parts of the border areas specially the sensitive areas so that future these kinds of incidents where innocent lives are lost does not happen ever again in any part of the country for that matter of fact,” he said.
He said that the state government is hoping for a positive result in the days to come.
On Thursday, the cabinet delegation had met the union home minister Amit Shah, who had assured that the Centre will immediately institute a CBI enquiry into the Mukroh firing incident which took place on November 22.
