SHILLONG, MAR 26: Under pressure, the Meghalaya government sanctioned a Rs 24.10 crore to clear the pending salaries of over 3000 primary school teachers in the state following threat of an agitation by the teaching staff if there was delay in releasing their salaries.
The primary school teachers under the banner of the All Meghalaya Primary School Teachers’ Association (AMPSTA) had threatened to go on agitation if their salaries were not released by March 26. The government sanctioned the money on Monday following which the teachers have suspended their proposed agitation.
The amount has been released for the disbursement of pending dues of teachers in both government and non-government aided schools with effect from December 1, 2012 to February 28, 2013.
There are a total of 3460 teachers in non-government schools but only 392 in government primary schools falling under 15 sub-divisions in the state.
AMPSTA general secretary FC Shullai told reporters, “We have called off our agitational programme as government has agreed to release the pending dues of the teachers.”
Referring to the statement made by the deputy chief minister in charge of education RC Laloo on the late submission of utilization certificates Shullai said, “It is true, that the delay in the release of the salaries of the schoolteachers in the state is due to late submission of the UCs by the some of the DI’s offices.”
Shullai said this delay on the part of some of the DI’s offices has affected the teachers in the state.”- By Our Reporter
