Shillong, Oct 3: Meghalaya government Wednesday instituted a magisterial inquiry into the irregularities in the Shillong district jail which currently houses an arrested Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) chairman Champion Sangma, said Chief Minister Mukul Sangma Wednesday.
“An appropriate enquiry was instituted to go into few developments which took place over the last few days (in the administration of the district jail),” Sangma said.
The Shillong district jail which currently houses 230 inmates have been under media attention in the past few days after the GNLA chief was allowed to mix with other inmates despite being kept in a high security compartment.
DGP (Prisons) Kulbir Kishen had last week sent a confidential report to the state government alleging involvement of the lawyer of the militant chief in bribing the jail officials besides the jail staff’s corrupt financial practises.
According to the report, Kishen claimed early detection of the “corrupt practices” had prevented another jail break.
The minister in charge of jails had separate meetings with his officials after which the Sangma was briefed on the developments.
Sangma said a magistrate and an account official of the government will inquire into the issue and submit its findings to the government before the government can take a final call on the issue.- By Our Reporter
