Shillong, Nov 2: Meghalaya government signed an MoU with KPC – a Kolkata based company for setting up of the medical college under Private Public Partnership (PPP) which is the first of its kind in the country. The signing marks the effort of the Meghalaya government to improve quality healthcare services and provide trained medical staff in the country’s north eastern region.
The concessionaire agreement was signed by the State Health and Family Welfare commissioner and secretary DP Wahlang and KPC group president Dr KP Chaudhuri in the presence of Chief Minister Mukul Sangma Friday.
Speaking on the occasion, Sangma said, “Setting up of the medical college will not only be for the purpose of producing doctors but to a great extent allow people of the region to get access to “super specialty treatment facilities” which the NE region is lacking behind.”
Sangma said the super specialty treatment facilities which will be set up in the medical college will help erase the burden of people to go to big hospitals beyond the region. He said, “There are instances where people due to poor economical background have to surrender to the disease and many precious lives were lost due to the absence of such system within the region.”
“Health issue which is critical to NE will be addressed to provide quality universal health services to the people,” Sangma added. He further informed that the government is coming up with the “Megha Health Insurance Scheme” which will cover the entire state population.
The first medical college of 100 seats cum teaching hospital of 500 beds will be set up at the present location of the RP Chest TB Hospital and the first batch would be admitted latest by May, 2017 of which 40 per cent of the seats will be reserved for the students of Meghalaya.
Sangma also informed that the government is coming up with another medical college at Tura in West Garo hills district and said all steps required to be taken by the Health and Family Welfare department simultaneously are in the right track.
Earlier, health and family welfare commissioner & secretary DP Wahlang said, “The medical college was the vision and brain child of the Chief Minister.” He informed that the entire project of having a full-fledged medical college and 500 bedded hospital would be completed by 2020.
Meghalaya chief secretary WMS Pariat said that the signing of MoU for setting up the medical college is the culmination of a process which has taken over a year but now a dream has come true.
KPC Group was selected out of 5 bidders for the project and the Government of Meghalaya had roped in the services of IFC as Project Management Consultant for this particular project.- By Our Reporter
