GNLA welcomes talk offer

TURA, MAR 11: The Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) on Wednesday welcomed the offer of the government for negotiations. The outfit said that if government is serious about its intention then they can come forward for talks.

On Monday, Meghalaya governor Keshari Nath Tripathi had made a conditional talks offer to the outfit provided the militant outfits gives up their anti-national stance and abjure violence. The governor had made the remarks at the opening day of the budget session of Meghalaya assembly.

“We respect the negotiation offer by the governor Keshari Nath Tripathi but it is not new for us. Last year Dr. K K Paul had offered the same and has cheated us”, said a release uploaded by the outfit in its facebook page.

Terming that talks with other outfits have failed even after an agreement was signed, the GNLA said, “The nation have witnessed how sweet words tasted bitter for other organizations”.

The GNLA stated that if government is interested to hold talks an interlocutor should be appointed.  “We will closely observe the offers and the truth behind it then only we will think of it”, said the release.

The GNLA also stated that as per their constitution the outfits chairman and general secretary will sit in the table for negotiations with the government.  “If government’s intention is right and their negotiation offer is satisfactory we will be ready for talks”, it added.

The outfit had expressed its willingness to talk last year as well. However, it was not considered. The government has clearly stated that outfits willing to come forward have to shun the path of violence.

The outfit has posed a challenged before the government by launching successive offensives against the security forces. Four police personnel were killed by the outfit in an ambush at Panda reserve forest area, near Rongara in South Garo Hills yesterday.

The GNLA is yet to claim responsibility for the attack.- From Our Correspondent
