GNLA threatened police

TURA, APR 10:  The Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) has issued a threat to Meghalaya police to halt their operation against them or else they would ambush security forces and launch major offensives including serial blasts.

In a press statement issued by GNLA joint publicity secretary Garo Mandei Marak, the outfit said, “We won’t dither to blow up and ambush them (police) while they are patrolling. The chief minister and home minister should not get personal and hunt us down for their own personal ego”.

Terming that the outfit is prepared to take dire steps against the government, the statement  warned of a serial blast, especially at Ampati, the constituency of chief minister Mukul Sangma. The outfit said the intensive operation against them was because the outfit criticised home minister Roshan Warjri.

“Hunting us down and busting our camps won’t demoralise us. Our struggle will continue. We resolved to remain by our demands. We will voice against fake encounters in Garo hills, for suppressing general society, arresting and implicating the innocent people with false charges in Garo hills by police in the name of law”, the GNLA release said.

The GNLA statement said if government sees that gun is the only solution to tackle insurgency then they will follow the same path. It said, “Till now we have been silent considering and letting police perform their duty while plying through public roads and villages for operations. We have cautioned our commands not to shoot them for the sake of their families. If the operations against us do not stop, the police will meet the same fate what they saw in Rongara”, the release added.

Last month, the outfit had killed four police personnel at Rongara in South Garo hills. Following this incident police launched a massive combing operation in several parts of Garo hills. In the last three weeks six camps of the outfit were busted and over dozen cadres were arrested.

On Oragitok incident where a son of a village headman Sengbath Marak was killed in an encounter, the outfit reiterated that it was a “fake encounter.”- From Our Correspondent
