TURA, SEPT 27: Meghalaya police on Sunday gun downed a Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) militant at Patalgre village, near Williamnagar in East Garo hills.
The encounter took place at around 11:20 am in between Patalgre and Dorengkigre village, on the other side of Simsang river along the Durama range. Police said that around 20 cadres of the outfit were taking shelter in the village.
“We received information of the presence of a camp near the village of Patalgre. Our teams raided the camp and were spotted by the rebel group. There was a huge exchange of fire in which one cadre, identified as Katrak D Shira, was killed said Davis Marak SP of police, East Garo Hills.
Special Weapons And Tactics (SWAT) commandos of Meghalaya police led the operation. Police recovered an AK-56 from the encounter spot. “We chased the cadres but they managed to escape taking advantage of the village habitation at Dorengkigre. We refrained from shooting as we did not want to hurt the civilian population”, Marak added.
While the cops were returning from the village, the cadres who escaped attempted an ambush, which was foiled.
“They were unable to attack as there was retaliation from our side. The cadres managed to escape”, the SP asserted. The slain cadre was brought to Williamnagar at 2 pm. No policemen were hurt in the encounter.- From Our Correspondent
