Militant body recovered

TURA, APR 10: Meghalaya police on Friday recovered a body of a suspected Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) rebel killed in yesterday’s encounter at Amingokgre village, near Dadenggre in West Garo hills.

“The deceased who was wearing a black dress and black cargo pants was part of the group of militants taking shelter when our teams raided their hideout. This morning when our search was resumed in the encounter area his body was recovered approximately 500 meters from the place of firing,” said Mukesh Singh, West Garo hills SP.

Police recovered Rs. 19,000/- from the trousers of the slain rebel.

Police suspect the body to be that of Doncheng, the area commander of GNLA’s Indian and Dalton command.  “Both Dalton and Indian are area commanders of GNLA operating in the Dadenggre-Rongram region,” Singh added.

On Thursday, when police raided the GNLA hideout, the militants fled after exchanging fire leaving behind a 9mm pistol with two magazines and 29 live rounds along with GNLA demand notes and other incriminating documents.- From Our Correspondent
