TURA, MAR 26: In a major crackdown by Meghalaya police, the joint publicity secretary of Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) Garo Mandei Marak was on Thursday arrested from Anogre village in West Garo Hills.
Mandei identified as Anurag S. Sangma, 21is a resident of Megongre locality, near Rongram in Tura town. He is a degree student of a college here. Anogre is about 33 km from Tura town.
“Based on source inputs we intercepted a Winger while he was traveling from Tura to Kharkutta in North Garo hills”, said Mukesh Singh, West Garo Hills SP.
Mandei was traveling with his girlfriend when the police apprehended the duo. “His girlfriend was from Anongre village, so after the arrest we searched her house and found an air gun hidden in a garbage bin”, Singh informed.
Inspector General of Police (Operations) GHP Raju has termed the arrest as a major breakthrough for West Garo hills police team. “Mandei is an educated youth and was in the pay roll of GNLA. It is an important catch for the police. He was the one who was instrumental in sending press notes, threat to officials and was highly active on social networking site”, Raju said.
The police feels that GNLA’s commander-in-chief Sohan Shira was scouting for an educated person for carrying out publicity of the outfit and Anurag alias Mandei was their “right choice”.
“Mandei is far more dangerous than criminal. He was in direct contact with people”, Raju added.
Police has recovered three mobile from his possession. His girlfriend was release after bail surety by the West Garo hills police. Interrogation is on.
Meanwhile, three other GNLA cadres Limbert G Momin, 23, Ten B Marak, 34 and Limforman M Marak, 25 were arrested from Jengjal area, near Rongram in West Garo Hills. – From Our Correspondent
