TURA, NOV 24: Meghalaya police on Tuesday arrested four Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) couriers from Chokpot in South Garo hills. They have been identified as Batchan T. Sangma, 33, Latdin M. Sangma, 22, Naibinath Ch. Sangma, 28, and Nalu T. Shiek, 32.
They were GNLA informers and use to carry goods and ration for the outfit”, said GHP Raju, inspector general of police (operations). He also informed that these people acts as spies and pass on information of police movement in the area.
Raju also informed that they have identified other informers of the outfit, who are based in Chokpot and Tura.
In Tura, four GNLA cadres were arrested today. “They were involved in serving extortion letter to businessmen of Tura”, informed Raju. The cadres are – Talseng Momin, 22, Ballison Ch, Marak, 20, Batchan M. Sangma, 29, Disim M. Marak alias Bilgrak, 18.
“They have confessed that GNLA offers them Rs. 1000 each for serving a demand letter”, said Raju.
The arrested cadres have disclosed that the victims never disclose about them to police. “After collecting the ransom, they keep 10 per cent and hand over the rest to the GNLA area commander”, informed Raju.
The cadres, who were arrested today, were involved in serving ransom letter to traders at Dadenggre, Tura and Rongram area. The four were arrested from different localities of Tura.
“These GNLA cadres are most dangerous as they live in the midst of the people and collect information and pass on to the GNLA. Meghalaya police have identified this network and has initiated special drive to identify and track and bring them to justice”, Raju added.
The top official also requested the media to carry the photographs of the arrested cadres for information to public and to their relatives, who might not be aware that they are involved with GNLA. He also informed that Meghalaya police is working on to break this network operation for GNLA and other outfits, which is a threat for the people.- From Our Correspondent
