SHILLONG, NOV 14: A ‘civilian cadre’ of the proscribed Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) was arrested from a remote village in West Khasi Hills district. John N Sangma of Nongchram, was first apprehended by villagers of Riangdo for his involvement in extortion, police said.
The villagers later handed him over to the Shallang police station, police informed. “He (Sangma) was arrested and also booked under Unlawful Activities Prevention Act,” a senior police official said.
On being interrogated, Sangma revealed he was a civilian cadre of the GNLA.
Further, the police officer said, “According to him, the GNLA has recruited him as civilian cadre to identify businessmen for kidnapping, serving demand notes and to spy on police movements. He is working under the West Khasi hills Command.”
Moreover, the accused also revealed that the GNLA has been recruiting civilian cadres who are not given any training in handling arms and explosives but work as GNLA civilian cadres.
GNLA is paying Rs 3000 as remuneration and commission on all successful extortions and kidnappings based on information provided by these civilian cadres. “The names of the other civilian cadres were also given to the police, who are now conducting search operation in Shallang area,” he said.-By Our Reporter
