SHILLONG, AUG 1: The Congress led Meghalaya United Alliance (MUA-II) extended term of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) for another six months after the final peace settlement with a Garo rebel outfit under-ceasefire is waiting the approval of the newly formed BJP government at the centre.
“We have approved the proposal of the District Council Affairs (DCA) department on the need to grant extension of the term of GHADC for another six months which will expired in February next year,” Chief Minister Mukul Sangma told reporters after the cabinet meeting on Friday.
The six months extension of the term of the GHADC will expire on August 17, as the state government wanted to complete the peace process after the tripartite ceasefire agreement with the Achik National Volunteer Council (ANVC).
“Since there was also the parliamentary election and then the reconstitution of a new government at the centre, the exercise was further delayed and could not be completed,” Sangma said.
Sangma informed that after having discuss with the present NDA led government, the state government have been given indication that the agreed text settlement has already been approved by the union government and the exercise to complete the peace process will be initiated soon.
Meghalaya district council affairs minister HDR Lyngdoh said, “It is a need to extend the term of the GHADC for another six months as time is too short to hold for the elections.” According to him, as per the Sixth Schedule of the constitution, the Governor may extend the term of the district council not exceeding one year.
“Under the prevailing situation, approval is sought for and have been granted by the cabinet,” Lyngdoh said while informing that the extension would expire on February 17, 2015.- By Our Reporter
