SHILLONG, AUG 3: Meghalaya government has decided to impose two months administrator rule in the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) as the term of the council will expire on August 17 and the elections process to GHADC will be completed within October 21.
The proposal for putting GHADC under the administrator rule was approved by the cabinet in its meeting on Monday as the elections process to the district council cannot be completed within August 17.
“The cabinet has approved taking over of the administration of the GHADC by the Governor for a period of two months with effect from August 18 till October 21,” chief minister Mukul Sangma told newsmen after the meeting.
Sangma said the cabinet also approved the recommendation to appoint the deputy commissioner of West Garo Hills District as the administrator for the period.” He said when the state government under the process of holding elections GHADC will have to be under the administrator.
The calendar for the elections to the GHADC has already been worked out by the District Council Affairs (DCA) department and notification will be notified shortly.
“The calendar is such that they will have to complete the process within the October 21, that extended period of two months when the GHADC will be under the Administrator,” Sangma informed.
In addition, the DCA minister HDR Lyngdoh said that the department had earlier prepared to hold the elections within the extended period (before August 17), but the state election department had requested that the elections to the GHADC should be conducted only after the recently concluded Chokpot bye-elections.
“So, the DCA department has work out the modalities for preparation of conducting the elections and the council elections will held within August 17”, Lyngdoh informed.- By Our Reporter
