SHILLONG, AUG 27: The state BJP-Garo hills unit on Saturday the GHADC to issue birth/death and other certificates to Scheduled Tribes, as per the provisions of the Agreed Text Settlement signed between the centre, the state and disbanded ANVC and ANVC.B. In a letter submitted to the GHADC chief Dinang T Sangma, BJP-GHU president Bernard N Marak said, “The GHADC is requested to register all birth and death of all scheduled tribes living in areas under its jurisdiction.”
He informed the issue of scheduled tribe is one among the responsibilities transferred back to the GHADC through the “Agreed Text for Settlement” signed with ANVC & ANVC.B in New Delhi.
Stating that the Agreement was negotiated and framed into an agreement with sole objective to strengthen the traditional system, Marak said, “I request you to take note of the fact that the contents of the agreement are carefully drafted and there is a need to be implemented sincerely,” adding “Agreement no 2.1 (i) clearly states that registration of Birth and Death be transferred to the Council for which you need to take immediate step to start issuing the said certificates.”
The BJP leader further stated that it is the constitutional responsibility of the GHADC to keep record of all Scheduled Tribes within the GHADC’s area of the state. He said scheduled tribes are running from pillar to post spending considerable amount of money to obtain birth and other certificates from state departments.
The BJP leader also pointed out that it is wrong on the part of the MDCs to recommend to the scheduled tribes to apply for “Caste Certificate” as Caste Certificates are actually meant for Scheduled Castes not for the Scheduled Tribes.-By Our Reporter
