SHILLONG, AUG 9: The Garo Hills State Movement Committee (GHSMC), spearheading the demands for a separate Garo state, wants the inclusion of Kamrup and Goalpara districts of Assam in the proposed “Garoland.”
GHSMC president Augustine Marak said that the committee wants the two districts of Assam to be incorporated in Garoland as majority of the people living in these two districts belong to Garo community.
The GHSMC is also planning to go to Delhi in September-October and stage a dharna in the national capital to press for its demand of Garoland.
On Thursday the GHSMC had give twelve hours Garo hills bandh call which was a success in all the five districts of Garo hills in Meghalaya to press for its demand of separate Garo state.
“We are not communal but we want a separate state because of the difference in our culture with our beloved Khasi and Jaintia Hills brothers,” Marak said.
Marak, however, informed that the GHSMC wants to carve out the new state through mutual understanding
The demand for the separate state for Garos gained momentum after the Union Government gave its nod for the formation of Telangana.
Though the recent agitations did not have any impact in plain belt of Garo Hills, Marak said that they will again call for agitations after the Independence Day celebration.- By Our Reporter
