SHILLONG, FEB 24: The Border Security force once again showing it’s alertness on the International border, seized 900 kgs Ganja on Saturday evening. Acting on a tip off about suspected smuggling of Ganja through a truck bearing No. NL – 01 – K – 7415, troops of Border Security Force, laid a Mobile Check Post on NH – 44 near BOP Rattachera, Ex – 19 Bn BSF under Sector Jowai. As soon as the truck reached near the BSF persons, alert troops tried to stop the truck. On being attempted to stop, the truck fled and later after appx 03 kms, the truck met with a minor accident and the occupants fled.
BSF party chased and reached the place of accident. Party also seized truck bearing No. NL – 01 – K – 7415. During the operation cautious BSF troops seized the above truck loaded with 900 kgs Ganja worth Rs. Rs. 1.35 crore with the vehicle.
The BSF has increased vigil to deny any smuggling of psychotropic substances/ narcotics/alcohol to Bangladesh and in this task BSF is also seeking the help of Meghalaya Police as well as Border Guard Bangladesh also. The biggest impact of increased border patrolling and fencing has resulted in a sharp dip in cases of this type of smuggling. BSF has stepped up its special drive against the smugglers and has intensified its operations on the Indo-Bangladesh Border to prevent nefarious design of trans-border criminal to maintain tranquility in bordering areas of Meghalaya state.
Similarly in another incident, the BSF troops deployed at Tuka, East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya seized 124 bottles Phensedyl cough syrup and foiled the forced attempt of Phensedyl smuggling. It is mentioned that the Phensedyl cough syrup is consumed in Bangladesh in large quantities, against the recommended small doses, to get a kick. With the consumption of alcohol prohibited in Bangladesh, Phensedyl addiction has been on the rise.
The apprehended persons and seized items handed over to the concerned department for further disposal.
