Fund okayed for blacktopping rural roads

rural roadShillong, January 18: As the roads under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) are kutcha roads the state government has sanctioned one crore rupees to each block of the state for black topping of the roads.

Meghalaya Community & Rural Development (C&RD) minister Prestone Tynsong informed that the government sanctions Rs 25 lakhs per kilometer for blacktopping of four kilometers of roads in each district.

With 39 blocks in the state, the department plans black topping of 156 kilometers of kutcha roads under the MGNREGS.

Stating that the government till date has constructed not less than 200 kilometers of roads under the MGNREGS, Tynsong mentioned that the BDO’s have been directed to construct more roads  and even the rural people are being encouraged to construct roads under the fund provided by the central government.

Blacktopping of road increases its durability.

Tynsong pointed he recently met union minister Jairam Ramesh after which rupees  Rs 63 crore was sanctioned to the state for the purpose. Admitting that the department did not received funds for the last two months, he informed that there  is a corpus fund of Rs 35  crore with the finance department to tide over the crisis in the implementation of the scheme.

Asked about the various irregularities which had surfaced in the implementation of the scheme, Tynsong said social audits are conducted to check out any such lapses and all BDOs have been directed to remain vigil to the possibility of such irregularity taking place and accordingly take action against those found to be committing fraud. – By Our Reporter
