SHILLONG, JUNE 24: Fugitive former Meghalaya police officer Nurul Islam who was on the run for some years was remanded to 14 days judicial custody by the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) after he surrendered before the court on Wednesday.
The fifty- year old Islam went into hiding after he was alleged to have molested and raped two minor sisters in South Garo hills.
East Khasi hills SP M Kharkrang told newsmen on Wednesday, , “The accused cop has been remanded to 14 days judicial custody.”
It is learnt that Islam lawyer had applied for bail but it was rejected after the government’s counsel sought cancellation of the appeal.
Islam had been absconding for the past two years.
Islam who was officer in charge of Ampati police station had been accused of molestation and raping the two sisters not once but twice – once on March 13 in his room at the police station and on March 31, 2013 when the elder of the two sisters was at home alone.
Islam was arrested on June 1, 2013 but he managed to escape from police custody at Tura, the district headquarters of West Garo Hills.
After his escape, the Meghalaya police department came in for lots of flak from different quarters for its failure to nab the accused cop.
The criticism against the police department was so much that home minister Roshan Warjri had to assured on the floor of the assembly that steps have been taken by the department to apprehend the rapist cop.
A team led by an inspector was sent to Guwahati, Bagaigaon, Barpeta Assam and Shillong to investigate and find out where Islam was hiding.
Warjri had informed the assembly that all the bank accounts of Islam had been frozen and his immovable properties were also attached by the Court of Additional District Magistrate (J), West Garo hills, Tura besides charge sheeted the accused cop on November 6, 2013.- By Our Reporter
