TURA, JAN 2: Four Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) militants surrendered before West Garo Hills SP in-charge Bruno A Sangma at Tura. The group was led by senior militant Banang G Momin alias Bikrop of Rongjeng who had undergone arms training from the outfit and had passed out from the 5th batch of recruits of the GNLA.

He was the lone member to surrender with a weapon. He handed over a 7.65 pistol with some ammunition.

The other cadres who gave themselves up were Tapseng M Sangma alias Rakchak of Rongsak, Walgrik A Sangma from Chasingre, both 6th batch of recruits from the outfit, and Damseng Ch Marak of Rongsak who underwent arms training for three months.

The last year had been a turbulent year for Garo Hills with militancy taking centre stage as killings, abductions and extortion created havoc in this once peaceful region that saw the dawn of insurgency in the early 1990s’ and has since failed to end.

Part of human body found in Garo hills jungle

Police teams scouting the jungles of West Garo Hills district have retrieved a portion of human leg in Garobadha area which is believed to be that of a man abducted by armed dacoits recently.

The remains were found in an area where police teams had been searching to locate a 22 year old man who was abducted by armed criminals a week ago.

“A 22 year old man from Hallidayganj identified as Shaminul Islam was kidnapped by armed dacoits last week. We believe the remains to be of him,” said a police official from Tura.

It is strongly suspected that the criminals murdered their victim after receiving the ransom money for his safe release.- From Our Correspondent
