Shillong, August 24: Even as the Meghalaya NCP merged with the National People Party (NPP) Friday, its national president Sharad Pawar dissolve the party committee in the state and constituted an ad-hoc committee with Sanbor Shullai- who is still the party legislator- as its convener.
NCP national general secretary Praful Patel who is looking after the party’s affair in the north east informed that Pawar in consultation with the central observer of north eastern states former Rajya Sabha MP Robert Kharshiing decided to dissolve the Meghalaya NCP committee and formed an ad-hoc with Shullai as its head.
NCP sources said that Sharad Pawar wants to rebuild the party in Meghalaya even if it has suffered a setback because of Sangma’s decision to merge the Meghalaya NCP unit with the new National People’s Party (NPP).
Sharad Pawar, sources claimed, is looking to concentrate in Khasi and Jaintia hills and get some seats in early next year Assembly election in Meghalaya. Sources said, “Of course, Pawar knows that the NCP has no future in Garo Hills but he is hopeful of getting some seats in Khasi and Jaintia hills.
The party is looking toward rebel candidates of various parties like the UDP, Congress and even the NPP to come to its fold and fight the election under the NCP banner. Moreover with Sangma out of the NCP arena, the party can look forward to working together with the Congress- a la central government- and be a part of a Congress led coalition if the NCP manages to get some seats and Congress comes back to power.- By Our Reporter
