SHILLONG, APR 4: The Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) on Wednesday closed down over 30 shops after they were found without trading license from the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) in the city.
The checking of trading license was conducted by activists of the FKJGP East Khasi Hills Unit in Garikhana and Upper Mawprem area in the city.
Speaking to reporters, FKJGP EKH president Elton Warjri said that most of the shops that were closed down have failed to renew their trading licenses.
“We were also surprised when the shopkeepers told us that an inspector of the KHADC used to come and collect their documents despite of the fact that as per procedure it is them who should be going to the council’s office for renewal,” he said.
Informing that the organization would also conduct similar checking in different parts of the city, Warjri said they would also meet the KHADC chief PN Syiem for his intervention to ensure that illegal trading is not allowed.
Earlier, police also stop the activists from conducting the checking on ground that they have not got any permission from the KHADC. The FKJGP however decided to continue with the checking after the EM in-charge of Trade AN War, who on being requested, refused to deploy his enforcement officials.
