SHILLONG, APR 15: Five robbers were arrested in Shillong by the police before they could execute their plan of committing dacoity in Mawsynram. The police also recovered arms and ammunition meant to be used during the dacoity.
Acting on intelligence inputs , the East Khasi hills police laid a nakabandi and arrested the five criminals from a local taxi bearing registration – ML 05 E 2767 at Mawngap, East Khasi Hills district SP M Kharkrang told reporters on Tuesday.
The five have been identified as Newman Kharbani alias Pynshai Rani alias Bahrit, a hardcore criminal and mastermind of the crime, Raju Sing (19) of Goraline, Laitumkhrah, Bharat Roy (21) of Golflink, Sanjay Krishna Gowala (18) of Alu Kudam, Madanrting and Munu Singh (23) of Punjabi Line, Bara Bazar, he said.
Kharkrang said, the five were planning to leave Shillong for Mawsynram to commit robbery and dacoity when they were nabbed by the police.
Two revolvers and eleven live ammunitions were recovered from their possession.
Kharkhrang said the district police had been putting Kharbani under surveillance after his release on bail which helped the police to check on movement.
Kharbani had been booked under Meghalaya Prevention Detention Act (MPDA) in 2004 when he was first arrested for his involvement in dacoity.
After his released in 2005, Kharbani resumed his criminal activities and was rearrested in 2007 with arms but was admitted in civil hospital from where he managed to escape on May 31, 2007.
Police however managed to re-arrest him on June 2007 and detained him under MPDA for a period of three years till July 2010. After his release, Kharbani was again arrested for dacoity from in Sohiong and was released on bail on November 2013.- By Our Reporter
