Shillong, Nov 19: The North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health & Medical Science (NEIGRIHMS) added a significant achievement Monday when the department of Cardio Thoracic & Vascular Surgery (CTVS) successfully conducted the first ever open heart surgery scientifically called the ‘Beating heart open heart repair of Atrail Septal Defect’ igniting hopes to many in the north eastern states with heart complications.
Twenty years old college student from Manipur was operated by a team of doctors led by Dr AG Ahangar, Director NEIGRIHMS that also includes Dr P Bhattacharyya, Dr. Manuj K. Saikia, Dr. Mohd Yunus and Dr. M. Kapoor.
The student had a hole in her heart from her birth and was facing difficulties. Her twenty years ailment was treated on Monday after she underwent open heart surgery at NEIGRIHMS.
For the first time “beating heart open heart repair of Atrail Septal Defect” was conducted in north eastern region. The blood from left side of the heart was crossing over to the right side adding to the burden of the working of the right heart and lungs of the girl.
The officials in the institute said that this patient underwent a cosmetic open heart surgery through her right chest instead of the routine midline chest surgery. The patient scar would not be visible once she recovers completely.
“This beating heart operation marks another milestone in the history of NEIGRIHMS and is likely to open a marvellous chapter for similar ventures in the North Eastern Region, besides adding to the teaching and training of other doctors in the Department of CTVS and Cardiology as well as Anesthesiology and critical care medicine,” said officials of the institute.
When he took over as NEIGRIHMS director, Dr Ahangar said he would give importance to the innovations and newer techniques and the conduct of various procedures at NEIGRIHMS, be it open heart surgery or Percutaneous Cardiac Interventions or else Radiological Interventions.
Dr. Ahandgar is reported to have expressed satisfaction over the recovery of the girl. – By Our Reporter
