SHILLONG, FEB 25: The District Transport Office (DTO) located at the third secretariat at Lower Lauchmiere was completely gutted when fire broke out at around 1.30 am Monday destroying thousand of important documents and cash stashed away in the strong room.
The DTO strong room that stores the documents and cash that have been collected have been presumed to be gutted in the fire. Police, however, are not ruling out foul play and are investigating the incident.
The fire destroyed at least three rooms including a strong room of the DTO office which contain cash and taxes records beside others, an officials said.
The DTO office is located at the building housing offices of the Right to Information Commissioner, Electricity Commission beside others.
East Khasi Hills district transport officer C Lyngdoh said he came to know that his office had been gutted by the fire only at 9:30 when he reached there.
Interestingly, the guard, B Shah was not present in the office when the fire broke out, police said. Shah apparently reached the office only when the firefighters have almost completed dousing the flames.
“We cannot rule out foul play in the fire incident,” a senior police officer on duty at the site told reporters.
The police officer said, thousands of documents were destroyed which were in the three rooms damaged by the fire.
The police have sought help from the Forensic department to investigate into how the fire broke out in the highly secured concrete building in the wee-hours of Monday.- By Our Reporter
