SHILLONG, AUG 23: A field level Financial Awareness Event was held at Lamin Village, Amlarem, West Jaintia Hills, on Thursday. The event was held as part of the financial inclusion agenda of the Reserve Bank of India.
Delivering the keynote address Anurag Asthana, GM and Officer in Charge RBI Shillong, highlighted the importance of financial literacy and financial inclusion for the benefit of the general public.
He spoke at length about the functions and activities of the RBI and also urged upon the stakeholders including banks and government departments to create awareness among the general public and to work towards providing the best possible services.
“The unfilled gaps in regulation or lack of awareness among the public is often taken advantage of by dubious individuals and agencies to commit fraud”, he further added.
The RBI officials through their interactive presentations informed the gathering on the need for financial planning and budgeting, precaution from fraudulent e-mails, SMS, phone calls and fraudulent companies, grievance redress mechanism in the banking system, features of genuine currency notes, the need for maintaining credit discipline, new developments in the field of digital transactions such as UPI, BHIM, USSD,etc.
The programme was attended by senior officers from RBI, officials from different banks operating in West Jaintia Hills District, district line departments, members of the local dorbar and villagers from the area.
