Deputy Chief Minister incharge Urban Affairs Sniawbhalang Dhar on Tuesday informed that the department is in the process of identifying places to rehabilitate hawkers from Khyndailad area.

“We have identified around 2-4 places. Once they are found feasible, we will shift all hawkers to such places. This is in line with the government’s decision to make Khyndailad hawkers free zone,” Dhar told reporters.

He said MUDA parking lot in Anjalee is one of the places identified for shifting the hawkers.

According to him, there are around 200-300 hawkers, who will be rehabilitated by the department.

Dhar said apart from Khyndailad, steps are also taken to make Motphran and Laitumkhrah area hawkers free zone as part of beautification of Shillong city.

“However, we will not abandon our hawkers, we will take care of them, which is why we are trying to find suitable locations for shifting them. We will try to complete the process at the earliest,” he said. According to him, the process will be completed by June, this year.
