SHILLONG, JAN 11: Women voters outnumber male voters in matrilineal Meghalaya. Of the 14, 90,015, 7, 53,307 are women voters. The voters are spread across 2, 485 polling stations in Meghalaya that goes to poll in February 23.
Even as Meghalaya Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) P Naik said there would be “zero tolerance” against those who tried to disrupt smooth conduct of elections, he hoped that the entire poll process is error free. He said the challenge before the state election department is to make voters come out and vote in large number.
Briefing reporters after the polls date were announced by the Election Commission of India, Naik has appealed to the people to cooperate to make the upcoming elections free from “money and muscle” power. He, however, said it is a difficult job to eliminate it (money power) hundred percent.
Even as Naik announced the model code of conduct, he said this is done to provide a level playing field to all candidates and political parties.
Naik informed that the election process should be completed by March 3 as the term of the current legislative assembly will expire on March 10.
Naik informed that the state electoral machinery is fully geared to hold elections in a “free, fair and fearless” manner although he expressed regret that it may not be possible to fully ensure that money does not play a role in inducing voters.
Naik said around 9,940 election officials will be deployed in 2,485 polling stations. The state already has 22 companies of central paramilitary forces, but it has sought for an additional 76 companies to be deployed especially in the militant-infested areas of Garo Hills.- By Our Reporter
