TURA, JAN 18: A Facebook post claims that the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) chairman Champion Sangma who is languishing in the Shillong district jail has resigned from the outfit.
The post was made public by GNLA self-styled public relation secretary Garo Mandei Ch. Marak on Sunday.
However, Champion Sangma’s lawyer Sujit Dey said that he does not know about such resignation of his client. He said, “ I am out of station right now and know nothing about my client’s resignation. I am returning to Shillong now from Delhi.”
The post also informed said that the GNLA has constituted a new 15 member committee, of which three are serving jail term. The post of chairman has been kept vacant. The post on the Facebook page said that the outfit will appoint a chairman if the outfit is invited by state or central government for peace talks.
The public relation secretary has often used the account for giving out information. The outfit is yet to give out any official press release on the matter.
It also said that the outfit is yet to receive any official letter from Champion Sangma on his resignation as chairman from the outfit .Sangma is serving jail term from 2012.
The 15 member committee has been given the nomenclature – “Division Making Body”. The key member include – vice-chairman Mikim Marak, commander-in-chief Wegara Shira (Sohan D Shira), deputy commander-in-chief Toding Marak, general secretary Raka Marak, finance secretary Rakkam Ch. Marak, foreign secretary Millam Marak, political secretary Bikdot Nikjang Marak, among others.
Wegara alias Shira has been heading the outfit after Champion Sangma was arrested in 2012.
he chief security advisor of the outfit is Bimangdopinchep Sangma. Baichung Cheran, Darwin Shira and Savio Marak have been appointed as secretary for internal affairs and security.
The outfit said that three members in the new body, who are lodged in jail are very active in the organisation.
The public relations secretary claimed that Champion Sangma has resigned from the outfit by making an announcement on Facebook. However, he is yet to send any resignation letter to its headquarter
