Farmers of North Garo hills held a protest rally on Tuesday at Adokgre village

TURA, FEB 11: The Adokgre Farmers Association of North Garo Hills held a protest rally on Tuesday at Adokgre village demanding release of seven hijacked broom vehicles.  The vehicles were hijacked allegedly by militants on February 3, which were released yesterday after the association leaders negotiated with the militants.

The villagers strongly protested against the militants for their acts and said such act will lead to no business transaction along Assam-Meghalaya bordering villages.

In a release issued on Wednesday, the association appealed to all militants operating in Garo hills not to work against the interest of the farmers. “Kidnapping businessmen, hijacking vehicles has direct adverse affect on the price of agricultural produces”, said Denilson D. Sangma, a member of the association.

The seven vehicles were from remote Rema and Ringku village in West Khasi hills. The association also demanded roll back of the broom royalty, which is collected by Garo Hills Autonomous District Council.- From Our Correspondent
