SHILLONG, APR 15: Shillong Lajong drubbed Mumbai football club by 2-0 in the last home match of the ongoing I-League played under the floodlight in the JN stadium on Sunday evening.
The evening was truly entertaining as the Shillong Lajong fans who as always turn out in large number were truly delighted at the opportunity provided by their team to cheers and savour the victory in the last home match. The men in red did not disappoint their fans this time and made amend for the draw in the last match against the ONGC played in the same venue.
Lajong dominated the game right from the word go against the sixth placed Mumbai FC as the men in red played some scintillating game and showed their on-field talent in every departments. The efforts of the boys in red paid off when in the thirty-three minutes the team got the opportunity to take the lead when a free-kick cross was tactfully converted to a goal by Minchol Son.
The Mumbaikers, of course, tried to turn fortune around but were outplayed by the locals.
The second half too saw Lajong players controlling the game as the Mumbaikers were fumbled to level the score. It was the local team who again scored for the second time when Sushil Kumar Singh shot from inside the box found the net on the seventy-eight minutes of the game.
By now everyone was certain that Mumbai FC was on their way to losing its second game in a row after being beaten by Mohan Bagan in Kolkatta.
Predictably Lajong fans could not have asked for more when the last whistle went off in the air giving the team the much needed victory in its home ground. Lajong’s Minchol Son was awarded the man of the match.- By Sandeep Rana
