SHILLONG, SEPT 21: Higher & Technical Education minister Roshan Warjri assured to examine the demands for expansion of the Sohra Government College and introduction science & commerce streams in the interest of the students’ community of the area.
“She (Warjri) assured to convene a meeting with the officials of the education department soon to examine the demands and also address the grievances faced by the college,” Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) South West Khasi Hills president M Budnud told reporters after the meeting on Wednesday.
He informed that the same issues were also put before former education minister RC Laloo two years ago but nothing was done.
Established in 1982, the Sohra Government College is in need of additional new building keeping as the students’ enrolment is increasing from year to year and it is also the only college in the area which caters to educational needs of the students, Budnud said.
According to him, the existing college building is accommodating a total of 920 students from classes XI-XII to degree (Arts).
Further demanding the introduction of science & commerce streams in the college, the KSU leader said students, who completed their XII science, especially those coming from not well to do families were forced to shift to arts because of absence of important streams in the college.
He said the union therefore urged the state government to consider speeding up the matter to improve the education in the area.-By Our Reporter
