Ex-Mawlai legislator says he is ready to contest LP polls from Shillong seat

UDP leader and former Mawlai legislator Process T Sawkmie on Monday expressed his keen interest to contest from the Shillong parliamentary seat in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections to be held next year.

“If the UDP allot me a party ticket, I am ready to contest from the Shillong parliamentary seat as I still want to serve the people of the state,” Sawkmie told reporters.

Stating that UDP is a big party, he said there may be many aspirants in the party  who also wanted to contest the MP election.

“Therefore, it will all depend on the party’s decision. If the party decides not to give me a ticket, as a party worker I will abide by its decision and support anyone, who will be nominated as the official candidate of the party,” he said.

Sawkmie said his decision to project himself as a candidate was based on his 20 years of experience as a former minister, legislator and member of the district council.

“I was a three-time MLA and one time MDC. I was a minister for 8 years. However, I got defeated in the 2023 poll. I accept the mandate of the people of Mawlai,” he added.

Further, Sawkmie also slammed the incumbent Congress MP Vincent H Pala for his alleged failure to raise issues concerning the people and the state.

“The present MP has failed to project the issues concerning the state. Meghalaya has many issues and ILP is one of the burning issues. The MP had raised this issue but it was just a formality as there is absolutely lack of seriousness on his part,” he said.

“We have elected an MP from a national party with the hope that such issues will get the attention of the Centre. We should question the MP why he has failed to ensure Congress support the ILP,” Sawkmie added.

He also said that the reason for Meghalaya being ranked as the poorest state in the country is because the state does not have leaders with commitment and dedication.
