Ex KSU GS among 7 to file nominations

SHILLONG, FEB 1: Meghalaya education minister Dr. Roytre Christopher Laloo is the only one to file his nomination papers on the third day in West Jaintia hills district. Laloo filed his nomination papers before the West Jainitia hills Deputy Commissioner and District Election Officer (DEO) PS Dkhar as a Congress candidate from 2-Jowai constituency on Friday. In East Khasi hills till about 2 pm six candidates had already filed their nomination papers.

In Shillong Laloo’s party colleague and former education minister Manas Chaudhuri also filed his nomination papers for the Laban constituency. In the 2008 Meghalaya assembly elections, Chauhuri had contested as an Independent from erstwhile Mawprem constituency and won. However he has now join the Congress and will be contesting as its candidate from the Laban constituency.

Among the eight who filed nomination papers two were from the United Democratic Party (UDP). Former KSU general secretary Hamlet Dohling, who is contesting the upcoming polls as a UDP from Mylliem, came in style. He came to file his nomination papers in the East Khasi hills DEO office to the tune of Khasi song, music and dances. It was most colourful of all the nominations that were filed on Friday.

Dohling party colleague Draison Kharshiing also filed the nomination papers as UDP candidate for the Nongkrem constituency.

The other three candidates who filed their nomination papers were all Independent candidates. Dr. OS Jyrwa and MP Muktieh filed his nomination papers for the Mawrynkneng constituency, while Robert Kharbuki who is also contesting as Independent filed for the Mylliem constituency.

Till Thursday, twenty-two candidates had filed their nomination papers in the whole state for the February 23 elections.- By Our Reporter
