SHILLONG, FEB 1: As many as thirty-nine hopeful candidates filed their nomination papers on Friday for the February 23 Meghalaya assembly elections taking the total number of candidates who filed their papers on day three of filing of nominations to sixty-one.
Of the thirty-nine candidates who filed their nominations on Friday thirteen are Independent and two are women candidates.
Prominent among those who filed their nomination papers are former Meghalaya chief minister and United Democratic Party (UDP president Donkupar Roy,Meghalaya Education Minister RC Laloo, former education minister Manas Chaudhuri, former KSU general secretary Hamlet Dohling and former Meghalaya Community & Rural Development minister Saleng A Sangma.
Both Laloo and Chaudhuri are Congress candidates who are contesting the upcoming polls from 2 Jowai and Laban constituencies respectively. Roy filed his nomination papers for the Shella constituency. Dohling is also the UDP candidate from Mylliem constituency while Sangma, who has been denied the Congress ticket, will fight as an Independent from Gambegre constituency.
While Laloo became the first candidate to file his nomination papers in West Jaintia hills district , Independent candidate Justine Dkhar also became the first one to file his papers from Khliehriat constituency in East Jaintia hills district.
For the Nongkrem constituency UDP candidate Draison Kharshiing filed his nomination papers..
The other three candidates who filed their nomination papers in the office of the East Khasi hills deputy commissioner and district election officer were all Independent candidates Dr Osaphis Jyrwa for Mawryngkneng, Mylliem independent candidate, Robert F Kharbuli and Mawryngkneng independent candidate, Manu Paul Muktieh.
Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) MDC and UDP candidate Titosstarwell Chyne also filed his nomination from Sohra constituency. Beside others filing their nomination included Shella independent candidate, K Mechaldo Roy Khylle and Sohra HSPDP candidate Mattsing Nongrum.
In Ri Bhoi district, Mawhati UDP candidate, Donbok Khymdiet, Nongpoh independent candidate, Badhok Nongmalieh, Nongpoh UDP candidate, Rona Khymdeit, Umsning independent candidate and former KSU president, Donkupar Sumer, Jirang Congress candidate, Abraham S Sangma were also among those who filed their nomination on the third day.
In West Khasi hills and South West district, two women candidates including Mawthadraishan HSPDP candidate Fenella L Nonglait and Mawshynrut Independent candidate Pelcy Snaitang filed their nomination.
The name of those who filed their nomination papers also includes Nongstoin Congress candidate Dr Adviser Pariong, Rambrai-Jyrngam Congress candidate Kingford Kharsyntiew, Mawshynrut Independent candidate Anvil Lyngdoh, Mawshynrut Independent candidate Roland Mawsor, Ranikor Congress candidate Martin M Danggo, Ranikor HSPDP candidate Rangsandor Syiem and Mawkyrwat HSPDP candidate Enbin K Raswai.
In East Garo hills nly two candidates turn up on Friday to file their nominations. Rongjeng Independent candidate Dr Julius R Marak and Williamnagar UDP candidate Santosh R Marak were the only ones to formally begins their elections campaign
In West Garo hills district beleaguered former C&RD minister Saleng A Sangma filed his nomination as Independent candidate from Gambegre constituency after being denied the Congress ticket. Other candidates who filed their nominations in West Garo hills district also includes Rajabala BJP candidate Philip A Sangma, North Tura Independent candidate Kredithson Ch Marak, North Tura Independent candidate Adamkid M Sangma, South Tura BJP candidate David Ch Marak, Salmanpara Independent candidate Righteous N Sangma and Dalu BJP candidate Sisir Marak.
Three candidates in South Garo hills district also filed their nomination papers which includes Independent candidates from Rongara Siju constituency Albinus R Marak, Ajitson G Momin and Baghmara Independent candidate Secondson A Sangma.- By Our Reporter
