SHILLONG, APR 1: Congress member of the GHADC Stevie Marak has termed the recent resignation of the chief executive member (CEM) Denang T Sangma as an act of “cowardice”.
In a statement issued here, Marak said that the no-confidence motion moved against the GHADC chief has set a historic precedent.
“This was the first time in a democratic set up that an elected representative and leader of the majority lost confidence in himself and his peers and resigned from his chair even before the commencement of the voting for the motion,” he said.
It may be mentioned here, the ruling NPP led executive committee in the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) was immediately dissolved following the resignation of the former chief executive member.
Stating that there was no indication beforehand that he would lose or win the motion, Marak however said, “Showing his (Sangma) cowardice, he resigned from his chair rather than face the challenge.”
The Congress MDC from Boldamgre was also of the view that if the former CEM had stood for the test, it would have either affirmed that his peers stood by him or his peers had lost faith in him.
He further lamented that his resigning abruptly has cut short the budget session adding that the budget session is not meant only for the ruling NPP only but for all the areas under the jurisdiction of the GHADC.
“Such people who are afraid to face challenges are not fit to be leaders. This also shows that there is no transparency in how they carry out their work,” Marak added.
