SHILLONG, APR 1: The process of commissioning of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) for the ensuing Lok Sabha elections began in the Ampati District Election Office on Tuesday.

Altogether 147 EVMs were commissioned by the sector officers in the presence of central observer Amita Prasad, district election officials and ECIL engineers. Prior to the commissioning of the EVMs, the observer inspected the sealed trunks containing the EVMs in the strong room of district election office in Ampati and also spoke to the officials and political party representatives on process of commissioning the EVMs.

This will be the first Lok Sabha elections in South West Garo Hills after it was upgraded to a district in August, 2012. There are three assembly constituencies, Ampati, Salmanpara and Mahendraganj with 24 sectors and 110 polling stations and a total electorate of 73,554 including service voters.

Meanwhile the second round of training for polling personnel in the district will begin on Wednesday.- By Our Reporter
