TURA, OCT 7: Meghalaya police on Thursday rescued abducted engineer Waseem Ahmed, 25, who was abducted on September 29 from Samanda – Jengjal by-pass, near Williamnagar in East Garo Hills.
Ahmed was rescued nine days after he was abducted.
Police said that Ahmed was held captive by newly formed outfit – United Garo Security Force (UGSF). He was rescued in a police raid at the outfit’s hideout from Gabil village, near Bajengdoba in North Garo Hills.
“Police team from East and West Garo hills had launched a coordinated rescue operation for the last five days. In the process six suspects were arrested. Today evening the police got breakthrough and raided the camp of the outfit and after exchange of fire with the rebels, Ahmed was rescued”, said GHP Raju, inspector general of police (operations).
On October 3, three suspects in connection with the abduction of Ahmed were arrested from Phulbari town in West Garo hills. Following interrogation of the three, other suspects were arrested later.
Ahmed from Rajouri in Jammu & Kashmir is working with a construction firm – BSC C&C Construction Company and was posted at Samanda in East Garo Hills. The company is currently involved in construction of NH-44 connecting Tura, Williamnagar and Nongstoin to Shillong.
Abduction
A driver of Mahindra pick up Ardanath Koch, 37 a resident of Barengapara, near Dalu in West Garo Hills was today abducted by unidentified gunmen from Doldanggre village, about 28 km from Tura.
“He was abducted at gunpoint by 8-10 militants from Doldanggre reserve forest area”, said Mukesh Singh, superintendent of police, West Garo Hills.
The incident took place around 6 am.
The Tura – Dalu stretch is famous for abduction. In the last sixmonths, more than 20 people were kidnapped. In August, a sport officer from Baghmara in South Garo Hills was abducted, while he was on his way to Tura. The militants released him a month later.-From Our Correspondent
