SHILLONG, JUNE 3: Concerned over the illegal limestones mining in Nongtalang Elaka under Amlarem sub-division in West Jaintia hills district, environmentalist and social activist HH Mohrmen shot a letter to union minister of environment and forest Jayanthi Nataranjan demanding that the centre should step in and put a stop to the illegal limestone mining in the area. Mohrmen said in the letter that the central government must judiciously put a stop to the illegal limestone mines in the district until the mining adheres of the strictest environmental norms that are followed.
Mohrmen points out that in recent months within Nongtalang elaka in West Jaintia Hills district there has been a furor of illegal limestone mining carried out in broad daylight all along the Nongtalang (Amtapoh till New Nonglamin)stretch of the NH-44(E) (Jowai-Dawki road).
Mohrmen laments that the limestone mining has reduce the thick green forests of the elaka barren. He also informed that the water sources are also polluted by the illegal mining putting peoples’ survival at risk. Some of the water sources that are under immediate threat are,, he claims are Am Dap, Am Keajing, Am Soh Mahaleng, Am Daloi, Wah Latyrngui, Am Khlew, Am Tren, Am Tuma, Wah Amdohkha and Amlymphung, Am hynshyai duwar, Am Kru, Am khruk khuk, Am Ho, Am Tkhiang, Am Sngai Daloi, Amdap Sohpiang.-By Our Reporter
