SHILLONG, MAY 20: Meghalaya governor RS Mooshahary said that the state must explore the possibility of “bat-breeding” even as he said that bat meat is rich in protein and are healthier to eat than the meats from domestic animals.
Releasing a book on “Caves for the Uninitiated” written by Meghalaya Adventure Association general secretary Bryan Daly Kharpran at the Youth Center on Monday Mooshahary said, “ The United Nations said that people should be encouraged of eating insects which tribals are very famous in. Bat’s meat is delicious and clean as they eat only flowers compared to the meat we get from other domestic animals.”
Terming Meghalaya as the “cave-capital” of India Mooshahary said one of the distinctive features of Meghalaya is its caves and praised the author of the book who he said has magnificently highlighted the famous caves by telling stories
Of the 1350 caves that have been identified in Meghalaya, over 850 of them have been discovered, explored and mapped with more and surveyed 387 kilometers passages– an achievement giving Meghalaya its prestigious place in the ‘caves-map’ of the world.
Kharpran’s book talks about the longest and deepest caves found in the state and the author said during the release of his book, “Caves in Meghalaya are beautiful in their own way and two new species said to be not known in any parts of the world have been found and documented.”
According to Kharpran Meghalaya is the only place where the longest limestone cave in the world is found. He said, “This longest limestone cave having a length of 200 kilometers located in Lumiawmew, Nongnang will surpass the longest sandstone cave in the world when survey is completed.
Bryan said the idea of coming up with the book is to educate layman about the importance of caving and its conservation and preservation as well as to encourage youths to take up caving.
Meghalaya is home to lots of cavers from all over the world because of the presence of remarkable caves.- By Our Reporter
