SHILLONG, DEC 9: An emissary of the Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) led by Simranjit Singh Mann arrived in Shillong and met the Governor Satya Pal Malik requesting his intervention into the Sweepers’ Colony issue.
Gurjit Singh Jhampur, who recently returned from the USA, came all the way from Punjab to Shillong on his bike. He traveled for five days.
This came following the move of the state government to relocate the Sweepers’ Colony from the Them Iew Mawlong as per recommendation of the High Level Committee on September 28.
Due to a very busy schedule, Governor Satya Pal Malik had to go for a medical checkup but he spoke with Gurjit Singh Jhampur on Wednesday.
The emissary also delivered the personal letter of Sardar Simranjit Singh Mann through whatsapp number of the ADC to the Governor Sunil Kumar.
”The Governor assured that the Punjabi Lane dispute will be resolved soon by getting together the representatives of the Sikh community and government of Meghalaya,” Gurjit said in a statement issued on Thursday.
He also informed that the Governor will also be visiting Punjab soon where the Sikhs are eager to honour him for the latest remarks about the Sikhs.
The president and management committee of Gurdwara Guru Nanak Darbar Shillong also welcomed Gurjit Singh Jhampur for coming on his bike to show solidarity with the Sikhs of Meghalaya.
The Sangat of the Gurdwara also appreciated the president Sardar Simranjit Singh Mann for taking action to resolve the dispute by sending his emissary Jhampur to meet the Governor.
In his letter to the Governor, Simranjit Singh Mann has requested for deployment of army contingent in the vicinity of the Sweepers’ Colony.
“We Sikhs and the public in general are concerned about the Sikh settlement in Shillong, which is about two hundred years old…I will be grateful if the Sikh’s settlement is assured of security and if thought best an Army contingent is posted in the vicinity,” he said.
Lauding the Governor for speaking strongly for the farmers, Simranjit said, “It was only Maharaja Suraj Mall of Bharatpur later Sardar Baghel Singh in 1783 and on the 26th Jan 2021 Sardar Jugraj Singh from village Vian under the leadership of our party’s Farm leader Sardar Jaskaran Singh who hoisted the flags atop the Red Fort in the past and now in the present.”
