SHILLONG, MAR 2: As many as eight candidates have filed their nomination papers for contesting from the Shillong parliamentary seat in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, slated to be held on April 11.
The last date of filing of nomination papers has come to an end here Monday.
Two-time sitting Member of Parliament (MP) from the opposition Congress Vincent H Pala is all set to seek re-election for retaining his seat.
He will be contesting against United Democratic Party (UDP) nominee Jemino Mawthoh, who is backed by the regional parties supporting the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government, and BJP candidate and South Shillong legislator Sanbor Shullai.
The Congress has also put up a substitute candidate who is the former legislator of Mawphlang constituency Kennedy Cornelius Khyriem.
The other candidates include former Indian Forest Service (IFS) officer and KHNAM candidate THS Bonney and Communist Party of India (CPI) candidate Justice Kharbasanti besides two independents – Samuel Hashah, a former kickboxer, and Romeo Phira Rani.
Meanwhile, scrutiny of nomination papers will be held tomorrow while the last date of withdrawal of candidature is fixed on March 28.
