EFLU Shillong explores Zubeen Garg’s legacy in Art, Society and Philosophy

SHILLONG, MAR 24: The English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU), Regional Campus, Shillong, is hosting a two-day national seminar on “Society and Culture in Art and Philosophy of Life: Understanding the Cultural Praxis and Epoch-making of Zubeen Garg and the North-East India” on March 26-27, 2026.
The seminar, sponsored by the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR-NERC), will feature discussions on Zubeen Garg’s impact on Northeast India’s cultural and social landscape.
“This academic gathering aims to critically evaluate the profound impact of Zubeen Garg on the cultural and social landscape of Northeast India,” said Prof. Mousumi Guha Banerjee, Director of EFLU, Regional Campus, Shillong.
Renowned author and filmmaker Parthajit Baruah will deliver the keynote address, exploring Zubeen Garg as a cinematic text.
Other notable speakers include Prof Dolly Kikon, Prof Jyotirmoy Prodhani, and Dr. Palme Borthakur.
The seminar will cover diverse themes, including stardom, identity, environmental advocacy, and ecological concerns in Garg’s art.
“Zubeen Garg’s music has been a catalyst for social harmony and collective memory,” said Prof Manash Pratim Goswami, who will moderate a reflective session.
The event will feature cultural tributes, including an inaugural song and a musical performance of Zubeen Garg’s songs by EFLU students.
The seminar will conclude with the planting of a Nahor sapling within the campus premises.
