SHILLONG, JAN 30: To decongest the national highway and the internal roads, the Shillong Traffic Police is coming out with proposals where Hopkinson Road, Jacob’s Ladder Road and Boyce Road will be opened in reverse direction, which will be implemented in the first week of February, before the schools in the city reopens.
Informing this, East Khasi Hills district SP M Kharkrang said, the ‘No Entry’ will be from Don Bosco towards St. Stephan’s Hall and Jacob’s Ladder Road. All vehicles will be plying in reverse order from Lower Lachummiere near DIPR towards Hopkinson Road and exit at Don Bosco Square.
He said vehicles will also be plying from St. Anthony’s College Junction through Jacob’s Ladder and exit at Don Bosco Square.
He said that there will also be ‘No Entry’ at Shillong Commerce College Junction towards St. Mary’s College. All vehicles will exit from Don Bosco Square towards Shillong College – Shillong Commerce College through Boyce Road.
Vehicles coming from Laitumkhrah and Upland Road can exit through Don Bosco Square – St. Mary’s College – Shillong Commerce College road.
There will be ‘NO RIGHT TURN’ for vehicles coming through Jacob’s Ladder and St. Stephan’s Hall Road towards Dhankheti. All vehicles will have to proceed straight towards Laitumkhrah.
Residents from Hopkinson Road can exit from Lower Lachummiere. All vehicles coming from B. K. Bajoria side and wanting to go to Laitumkhrah will have to use Jacob’s Ladder Road to Don Bosco.
The same will be implemented before school resumes.
“The aim is to reduce the traffic in Barik – Malki – Dhankheti areas and open the link roads which have not been put to full use,” the SP said while urging the general public to cooperate with the Shillong Traffic Police.
It is time to think for the public and the army will have to come forward to allow vehicle to pass; for instance, coming from Upper Shillong the road passing through 101 Signal could be used with no stoppage zone all along the road, cctv coverage and the Government come forward to make the road bigger. If one come from Jowai and is moving towards Cherrapunjee or West Khasi Hills (or vice versa) the road from Shillong view point may be used with no stoppage zone all along the road, cctv coverage and the Government makes the road bigger. The dam in Ward’s lake may be strengthened for light vehicles and to decongest Police bazar. Maximum traffic is experienced at Mawlai when coming from Guwahati especially in the evening and it is time to look for alternatives and to do so quickly.
