SHILLONG, APR 17: Meghalaya home minister Roshan Warjri revealed that “rape cases” forms a major chunk of the crimes against women in Meghalaya and East Khasi hills district alone saw as many as 62 out of the 179 rape cases registered between 2012- March 31, 2012.
Even as Warjri said that other crimes against women like molestation and cruelty either by husbands or relatives showed a decline in 2012 compared to 2011-2010, she how said that crime against women has become a matter of serious concern for the government.
Warjri told the reassembled budget session of the Meghalaya assembly on Wednesday that the state government has instructed the district police chiefs to initiate an effective investigation on all cases relating to crimes against women and also to review the pending rape cases.
Replying to a cut motion moved by HSPDP legislator Ardent Basaiawmoit, Warjri informed that after East Khasi hills, Ri-Bhoi followed with 32, West Khasi hills with 22, East Jaintia Hills reported with 17, West Jaintia Hills with 16, South West Khasi Hills with eight cases, South Garo Hills eight cases, West Garo Hills with six, South West Garo Hills and East Garo Hills with three each and North Garo Hills with two cases of rape in 2012 to March 31, 2013.
Of the 172, Warjri informed the assembly that charge-sheets have been filed in 52 rape cases so far.
With regard to molestation cases, Warjri revealed that East Garo Hills topped the molestation chart with 38 cases, followed by West Garo Hills with 23, West Khasi Hills and Ri-Bhoi with eight each, South Garo Hills with two and South Garo Hills with one case. West Jaintia Hills reported six cases of molestation, East Garo Hills and South West Khasi Hills with two each and East Jaintia Hills only one case.
In the molestation cases that were registered Warjri informed that 47 cases have been charge-sheeted.
East Khasi hills also recorded the highest number of cruelty against women by husbands and relatives with 15 cases registered, followed by West Garo Hills with eight cases. There were two such cases in Ri-Bhoi and one each in West Khasi Hills and North Garo Hills, Warjri informed. – By Our Reporter
