SHILLONG, NOV 8: A Meghalaya’s Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) P Syiem posted in West Jaintia hills sustained bullet injuries on Saturday morning when Assam police open fire at his team mistaking the for militants.

The incident took place at Moolber village under Block – I along the inter-state Assam-Meghalaya border.

Assam and Meghalaya police were supposed to conduct a joint operation against the Karbi militants who were actively operating in the area, official sources said.  The source said that the firing by the Assam police on the DSP is clear case of communication gap that led to police forces of both the states to open fire against each other.

Syiem was hit in the arms by the bullets and was immediately shifted to NEIGHRIMS and is undergoing treatment.

“It is just an unfortunate incident and there is nothing to read more on that… I think we need to renew our SOPs so that these things do not happen in the future,” Meghalaya Director General of Police (DGP) PJP Hanaman, who came rushing to the hospital, told reporters.

Elaborating on the incident, Hanaman said that information was received that there are lots of Karbi militants operating on the Assam-Meghalaya border and are harassing the villagers and taking money. Stating that there are a set procedures to be followed, he said, “We immediately inform the Assam police about the issue that is happening on the border.”

Thereafter, the Assam police sent a party from Hamren district on Friday and even sent another party on Saturday from their side. Similarly, we (Meghalaya) also sent a party from our side through Raliang side to the border, Hanaman informed.

“Our party reached the place at around 11 am and immediately entered into the forest where the militants were suppose to be operating but Assam police thought that police party from Meghalaya were militants because they dress in non-Khaki and started opening fire,” Hanaman narrated.

Hanaman informed during the heavy firing exchange between the two forces, the bullets hit the DSP who was leading the team from Meghalaya. On being asked, he said the doctor said that Syiem’s condition is serious but stable.- By Our Reporter
