Dry days are here

SHILLONG, FEB 20:  Electioneering for the February 23 Meghalaya assembly elections will conclude at 4pm on Thursday but the dry day will be effective right from the morning and will continue till Sunday. All the wine stores will be closed and the political parties and their candidates will have to finish campaigning by 4pm in the evening.

West Jaintia hills deputy commissioner and District Election Officer (DEO) P Dkhar told this website that election campaigning in his district has been peaceful so far. He said, “All the political parties and candidates have shown exemplary discipline while campaigning sticking to the timing religiously.”

Jaintia hills had been infamous during past elections as many cases of clashes and intimidations were reported. However, this election the campaigning has been rather peaceful in both the West and East Jaintia hills districts as there has not been any report of intimidation or threat.

Even in Shillong, elections campaigning by candidates have been peaceful by and large with except for some skirmish between the supporters of two candidates on Tuesday. – By Our Reporter
