Shillong, Nov 16:Drugs abuse is emerging as major crime in Shillong and it will top the crime chart soon if it goes unchecked, said East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police M Kharkhrang even as he said that crime against property is now topping the list of crimes in the city.
Speaking at the sideline of a meeting held between the police and Rangbah Shnongs (headmen) held at the police headquarter Friday as part of the “Safe-Secure Shillong” project Kharkhrang informed that as of now crimes against property is topping the crime chart in East Khasi hills, but if not curbed drugs abuse and peddling will soon overtake it.
Rangbah Shnongs of different localities pored to the police headquarter Friday afternoon to interact with the police officials as part of the project to make Shillong a safe place to live. During the power point presentation, Kharkhrang advice the Rangbah Shnongs to be careful when they catch drug addict or peddler as they might destroy the evidence and make the case weak.
Kharkhrang said, “If you happen to catch a drug addict or peddlers do not take the drugs from their pocket, but ensure that they do not take out and throw away. Many times when police reach the scene where the drug addict/peddler has been caught, we find the drugs in the hand of either Rangbah Shnongs or the people who caught them.” He said that this will make the case weak and the accused might not be convicted.
Talking about flesh trade, Kharkhrang cautioned the Rangbah Shnongs, especially the ngos, not to outrage their modesty by taking law into their own hand but just over to the police.
Kharkhrang also urged the house owners to register their tenants with the dorbar shnong as he said this will help in knowing the background of the tenants if they commit a crime. Like wise he said employers also must know their employees as in some case the owner of a firm do not know the real identity of the person they are employing.
Kharkhrang said that with the cooperation of the Rangbah Shnongs the crimes in different localities can be brought down drastically. He also informed, “Soon we will be interacting with the youths and seeks their cooperation in controlling crimes in the city.”
At the end of the meeting, the Rangbah Shnongs are expected to give their opinions and suggestions as to how to make Shillong save and secure for its citizens. – By Our
